  • Portland launches KYCH – “Charlie FM” on 2.0

    Admin 9:17 pm on August 13, 2009 | 0 Permalink | Reply

Lets all congratulate the work of the Portland KYCH team in their recent launch of the new Charlie FM website (http://www.charliefm.com).kych

Charlie, like many of our “Jack” stations has the difficulty of not having a large amount of content to host on the website.   However, this has not stopped Karen Shipley, Heather Collins, and Jeremy Robillard with good ideas.

A point about this website, I enjoy are the use of fictional characters for bloggers and audio.  They give the site a playful spirit and energy.

That Davis Wellington III has a great future.

    Excellent work!

  • Getting Your Email Delivered to the Inbox

    Jen 12:37 pm on August 12, 2009 | 0 Permalink | Reply

Getting permission to send an email is one thing, getting it delivered to the inbox can be quite another. The ISPs (Internet Service Providers) that host and maintain your subscribers’ email employ sophisticated filters to keep spam email content out of their users inboxes, and legitimate permission-based content often gets caught up in these filters.

Unfortunately, there is no simple formula to ensure your mail gets delivered to the inbox (if there was then spammers would use it as well). The filters employed by the ISPs are constantly changing to do battle with the latest spammer tactics. Most filters review the content of your message and apply a ‘score’ to your email based on certain characteristics that they consider common to spam messages. If your score gets too high, you get blocked. Here are some tips for keeping your score low and avoiding the spam folder:

Too many images, not enough text – spam filters look for keywords in the content of an email but they can’t read images, so it’s a common spammer tactic to use only images. As a result, spam filters now block messages with a low text to image ratio. If you are sending out just a bunch of pretty pictures and no text or very little text, expect to have problems getting delivered.

Not sending a text version – while you may be in love with the HTML email you created, don’t neglect to send a text version as well. While most filters won’t block you outright for not sending a text version of your HTML email, leaving this out can raise your score and be a contributing factor to getting caught in the filter.

Sending different content in your HTML and text versions – spammers love to try and slip past filters by sending benign content in the text version of an email and then sending completely different content in the HTML version. Filters are wise to this, and will send your message to the spam folder if they determine the content of the two versions is substantially different.

Spam Keywords, especially in your Subject or From Lines – as mentioned before, filters look for keywords that they consider to be ‘spammy’. Using a few of the common keywords in the body of your message probably won’t get you blocked, but each keyword can raise your score and contribute to your being blocked. And if you are putting common triggers like $, win, cash, save, !, or special offer in your subject line, you are highly likely to be blocked. Keywords vary by filter and no list is really complete, but click here for a list of keywords that have been identified as common among many filters.

Dear FNAME – we’ve heard from several sources now that using ‘Dear’ in your message can bump up your score significantly. So if you are merging the recipient’s first name into your message avoid the d-word.

  • StreamTheWorld Outage Update

    Jen 11:37 am on August 10, 2009 | 0 Permalink | Reply

Hello, All.  Over the weekend some or our streams were down, here is an update from the STW Team:

    =======================================================

We have been battling a trouble that started early Saturday morning affecting one of our internet carriers.
As you may or may not know, 3 weeks ago a bug was found with BGP and most equipment manufacturers have released a critical patch for their respective equipments. Since then, all internet carriers have been scrambling to update their equipments.

This weekend, for no apparent reason, some of our providers links in LAX started to get slow and we have been working feverously with them in identifying the exact cause of this slowdown.

At this point, the exact cause as not been identified, thus we do not know for sure if the equipment updates are the reason for this erratic behavior, but since nothing had changed prior, apart from these updates, it seems to point in that direction.

The faulty links have been taken offline while the carrier continues with their investigation.

At this time, the service is stable and there is more than enough capacity throughout our network to handle the load.

    =======================================================

If you have any problems today please let me know.

I want to congratulate Heather Harwood, Hank Dole, and the Entercom Digital team on the successful launch of the WLKK 107.7 The Lake music site 2.0! You can view the new site at http://www.1077thelake.com/.

Heather designed a stunningly beautiful site you’ll enjoy not only for its aesthetic value, but for its content as well. Check out the in-studio performances in the videos section and the information about the Lake Local Music Initiative. They were also able to integrate their existing EveryZing audio-on-demand site with the new platform.

The station has only two in-house talent, yet the team in Buffalo was able to put together a solid site. Well done!

    Hello, All.

Ando has a few updates that I thought you will be happy about.  Please share this information for those who use Ando on your team.

    1.       When you schedule a companion 234×60 preroll banner – it now shows the correct size of the banner – 234×60.  They updated this just for Entercom.  Please let me know if you have any problems since the update has been made.

    2.       For those of you who have been trying to generate a detailed affidavit by advertiser that option is now available.

    3.       Inventory Availability Report Update -  you will notice that you can now opt to filter the report by priority.  Urgent and high priority elements will be selected by default.  This will help breakdown the impressions based on priority set when a spot is setup.

    4.       The Spot Duration graph is now back Inventory Lab (this report tells you how many 30 and 60 second spots you have running on your stream).

If you have requests or bugs to report please feel free to send them on over to me.

    Til next time!

    Jen

I want to congratulate Chris Shaw, Matty Swanson, the rest of the WSMW team and Entercom Digital on the successful launch of the 98.7 Simon music site 2.0 launch! You can view the new site at http://www.987simon.com/.

This site has some great-looking graphics that really add some visual flair. Check out their flipper slides, the graphic above the video player on their home page, and the header images at the top of pages such as the Concerts page, the Events and Appearances page, the Tunes at Noon page, and others.

The station also did a thorough job setting up lots of photo galleries with great content. They found some really fun content to include. Be sure to check out the Bear Sightings 09 gallery, National Cow Appreciation Day with Chick-Fil-A, and The Adventures of Hotdog Man.

This site is another great example of collaboration between station personnel, a local webmaster, and Entercom Digital. Matty and Chris were both very actively involved in the site development process and their efforts made the site launch go smoothly. Thanks guys for another great site from Greensboro.

  • WCMF in Rochester Launches to 2.0

    The New WCMF

Congratulations to Paul Schmidt, the WCMF staff and the Entercom Digital team for the successful launch of Rochester’s  WCMF music site 2.0!   http://www.wcmf.com

The site does a good job of breaking mold for a classic rock radio website design and content.  Plus, dare I say it, is a great visual improvement on the old website.

Last week’s launch of WZPL brought social networking into our radar.  However, this week WCMF (along with WPXY in Rochester) have created their own social networking site “rocnet” along with Facebook and Twitter links for their on air staff.

    WCMF ROCNET
WCMF Hosts Page (check out the layout)

Full credit goes to Paul on this site.  With little work on my part, Paul created the three widgets on the home page and worked with Vortal to make his hosts, shows and schedule page look amazing.  I’m truly impressed with his hard work and attention to detail.  The guy just sent me the links I should update in the nav and he did the rest.  Thanks Paul!

I look forward to see what he will create for us on WBEE “The Bee” and WBZA “Rochester Buzz”.

Another stellar performance in Rochester… And if you have not seen their first site launch to 2.0, WPXY, I encourage you to take a look.

  • Which is better defeat or ReTweet?

Tags: branding, funny, Marketing, retweet, social networking, tools, tweeps,

retweetGet it? Like “retreat”. Yea you get it.

So you’re on Twitter already? Great! You’ve got some dedicated followers and occasionally hit people’s FF (follow friday) list. We’ve all been there. Okay, well some of us have been there. Regardless, you need to grow your followers. This is especially true of the Twittering professionals like DJs, station brands, and client initiatives. More people = more money, plain and simple. But how do you break beyond the occasional Tweep-to-Tweep recommendations? ReTweets.

Arguably the most powerful branding and messaging ability of Twitter lies in the RT (ReTweet). Twitter has brought a technological generation to your fingertips, but reaching the masses beyond your followers is a hard task. ReTweets help this effort, allowing and encouraging Tweeps to RT valuable data. From political coups to deals on lunch, the RT has proven to be a powerhouse of the Twittersphere.

Are you being ReTweeted? Consider the guidance of MASHABLE, one of the biggest entities in social media technology, with the article by Pete Cashmore “Get Retweeted on Twitter“. These guys know what’s up when it comes to gaining followers and spreading a brand throughout the social media world.

However, remember that through all the menusha of Twitter, Facebook, the blogosphere, and others: genuine, original content will always reign supreme.

  • Wednesday Morning Brightcove Update

    Jen 8:41 am on August 5, 2009 | 1 Permalink | Reply

    Hello, All.

I am hearing from our markets that the Brightcove problem seems to  have been fixed.  If this is not the case for you please let me know.  Here is what happened:

The underlying cause of Storymaker access and storyplate playback issues at this point is DNS caches pointing to and incorrect IP for http://www.storymaker-se.com. A Brightcove error resulted in a temporary problem which has been corrected, but it is taking time for all DNS caches to reflect the correction. Note that playback for most viewers is not affected.

IP address can be cached on local machines, or the network or even ISP level. Clearing caches, or having them time-out will restore proper operation.

Brightcove Engineering is reviewing the root-cause of this problem and will be sending the Service Interruption Report (SIR) to affected Publishers. I will ensure that you are included on this distribution.

If you have Brightcove problems in the future the first best step is to submit a ticket by visiting the Brightcove support page:  http://support.brightcove.com/en/contact

  • Brightcove Outage Update

    Hello –

This morning Brightcove sent this email regarding some troubles they were having this morning. All should be fixed, however it may take a bit of time for the fix to propagate. See email from Brightcove team member below.

    ==============================

    Hello,

You are being impacted by a Storymaker DNS problem that was reported and corrected earlier today, though it can sometimes take a while for the corrective DNS updates to propagate to all systems.

While the situation has been corrected, we are continuing to monitor, with Brightcove Systems Engineering standing by if needed.

Might I suggest that we touch base mid afternoon, and if the problem is still occurring I can escalate as needed.

    - Larry
