  • WZPL Indianapolis Z99.5 music site 2.0 launches

    Dan Muzyka 5:08 pm on July 31, 2009 | 0 Permalink | Reply

Congratulations to Nick Box, Scott Sands, Toni Moore, and the Entercom Digital team for the successful launch of Z99.5 music site 2.0! The site’s design is full of breathtaking visuals, from the page template design to the small details such as the hosts headshots and the social networking icons.

Speaking of social networking, WZPL has done an amazing job of tying in their Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking profiles. Check out their Hosts page, which not only includes links to each host’s Twitter and Facebook pages, but also displays several of the latest tweets each has made. Also not to miss is their Friend Us & Follow Us page, which gives an overview of the station talent’s presence on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and MySpace.

The site also has a lot of great content. Check out the Michelle Branch videos on their Z-TV page and all of the great content on their blogs.

What a solid site – the Indianapolis team should be proud!

  • I can’t e-mail a page at all!

Hey all, just wanted to give a quick update on all of the balance and 1 thing sites:

Some of you may notice that on the individual content pages you can no longer e-mail the page to a recipient. This functionality has been disabled for the time being as there are concerns about the possibility of e-mail spam being sent from those forms.  This same problem was noticed a couple of weeks ago, so reCAPTCHA was added to the form, though it has seemed to pop up again.

This realization bothered me quite a bit. I have read articles in the past about how reCAPTCHA had been hacked, but it is pretty much understood that with any popular service there is a constant battle between the maintainers of the service and those that would see the service brought to it’s knees (especially when the service in question is security related).

In doing some more research I have found that there are “companies” that actually provide outsourced manual labor for solving CAPTCHA problems.  So, imagine a large warehouse that looks kind of like you would imagine a calling center looking like in China or India, now imagine that all of those people are answering CAPTCHA’s all day long. This means that for $0.01 cents USD (approx) someone spamming can send an e-mail that subverts a CAPTCHA widget.  So what is the e-mailer’s ROI? Well in many cases and entire ID and credit line. So if someone sends out 1000 e-mails for $10 USD and they fool a single person in filling out information about themselves it becomes quite clear that there is quite the profit opportunity there.

So why not just shut down all of these warehouses of CAPTCHA crackers? Well, for one we don’t exactly have jurisdiction, but more importantly you don’t need a warehouse. One of the more popular trends now is to make viewers of adult content do that for you.  A very popular adult site model right now is to force a would-be viewer to fill out a CAPTCHA response before allowing them to view a video. I guess they figure that people are more apt to deal with a minor inconvenience of typing a couple of words over paying for their content.

So what does this all mean? Generally, the fact that reCAPTCHA can be subverted isn’t a huge deal because most scripts don’t allow the end user to actually type in the e-mail address of the recipient. I will be looking for some other solutions next week to get this functionality back into the sites.

  • WROQ Greenville Rock 101 music site 2.0 launches

Congratulations to Tracy West, the talent at WROQ Rock 101, and the Entercom Digital team for the successful launch of the new Rock 101 web site! The new site features comprehensive Concerts and Events listings for the region, tons of blog posts from the station talent, lots of details in the photo galleries and audio vault, station videos, and lots of social networking links to connect to the talent across the web. Be sure to check out the comical From Our Studios quickposts, too!

The jocks started weighing in on the site from their blogs:

Tracy West put a lot of work into making sure the new site fit her exacting standards. She trained her eye on every detail and asked lots of great questions during the site upgrade process. Her dedication to her sites really shows through in this one.

  • I just got $100 for buying a T-Shirt!

Okay, that didn’t really happen to me, but it is a legitimate security concern for a web developer. Nobody wants to get a call asking why someone was able to purchase a t-shirt from their form and not only get the t-shirt but also receive a $100 credit.

This really comes down to secure development and making sure that any user input is properly sanitized to and validated to ensure that the values that were submitted aren’t malicious attempts at ruining your month. It is easy to see why one would need to sanitize user data coming from a text field on a form, but let’s explore what may be a less obvious situation and why one would want to sanitize data from a drop down select.

  • WPAW Greensboro 93.1 Wolf Country 2.0 launches

    Dan Muzyka 3:11 pm on July 21, 2009 | 1 Permalink | Reply

Congratulations to Chris Shaw, Rick Johnson, Clay JD Walker, the rest of the talent at WPAW, and the Entercom Digital team for launching the new 93.1 Wolf Country web site! Clay wrote an awesome blog post about the features of the new site, which you can view at:
    http://blogs.931wolfcountry.com/clayjd/

Clay did a great job of describing the pages about Wolf personalities, shows, and schedule; streaming (including mobile streaming) and audio vault goodies; photos and WolfTV; Concerts and Events; As Heard On Air links; Playlists and Now Playing; and the Wolf Gang listener club. Not only has Clay been blogging, but he played a pivotal role in updating the content of the site. The new WPAW site is a great example of collaboration between station talent, the local web team, and Entercom Digital.

Finally, kudos to Rick, Chris, and everyone else in Greensboro for launching this site in record time (just over two weeks from start to finish).

  • Come with me if you want to live

The Entercom Digital team has replenished our blog!

In an effort to bring even more information, ideas, and laughs to the Entercom web-workers around the company we have revitalized our blog. Apart from the obvious changes in design, we have also opened up posting to the entire Digital team in hopes of providing a wide array of experience and expertise. So keep an eye on the blog.

I know for a fact that right now some of our team is conspiring some tantalizing topics spanning from the totally 1337 to the not-so-savvy. Brian, for instance, has teased that he might share some tips on security in coding, giving some of us nerdier nerds something to read. Whereas Dan is planning some solid meat and potatoes to help more of us orient ourselves in the ever-expanding web2.0 initiatives. And me? Well, I’ll do what I do best and post a little help on how to make fun of and alienate your co-workers. Just kidding. I’ll probably hit everyone with some info on blogging practices and maybe share some experiences in other new media.

SO…until the blog is popping with new content, check out the video below. And stay tuned!

    Caio!
